Donors said they would cut at least 10 percent from the USD360 million budget support they pledged to provide to Uganda for fiscal 2010-2011 because of the country’s failure to address corruption.

“Total budget support disbursements will … be at least 10 percent lower than intended, owing to weak progress in a number of sectors and a failure to address high-level corruption,” the donors, dubbed Joint Budget Support Development partners, said in a statement quoted by Reuters.

The donors include the World Bank, the European Commission, the Netherlands, the U.K., Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Norway, Austria, Sweden, and Ireland. They said that while Uganda posted significant progress in developing its education, water and health sectors, its progress in the transport sector was “disappointing.” They added that the government performed poorly in terms of compliance to civil sector reforms and financial management principles, according to the Independent.
